General Manager

CHS has an exciting opportunity in our Country Operations Division. We are looking for a General Manager for the CHS Mountain West business unit  in Missoula, MT    Montana to provide leadership and management oversight and work extensively with a local board of directors. You must have senior management experience in the ag industry (especially cooperative), with the ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives, strong leadership and team-building abilities, excellent supervisory and communication skills, and proven financial management experience.  You must be an experienced and innovative leader who understands accounting, finance/budgeting, planning, business process controls; and possesses excellent public relations and organizational skills to work independently, make decisions, and manage the total operation.  The business unit is a diverse cooperative with multiple locations including Refined Fuels, Propane, C-stores, Farm Stores, Grain, Feed, Agronomy, Crop protection, Retail seed. 
You will:
  Financial and Planning
  • Establish and implement short-term goals that are consistent with long-range plans for growth in operation, including facility, equipment and personnel.
  • Prepare operating and capital budgets.
  • Direct all financial operations of the regional business unit.
  • Investigate new business opportunities and make recommendations; conduct negotiations as agreed upon.
  • Develop a marketing strategy to increase public awareness of the cooperative’s products and services.  Execute the plan within budgetary guidelines.
  • Conduct ongoing communications with Board of Directors, management, and appropriate divisional personnel.
  • Participate in regional co-op and industry events.
  • Provide oversight to the regional operation according to company objectives to provide patrons with prompt, courteous and effective service while maintaining the efficiency necessary to achieve a maximum margin of profit.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws:  licenses, permits, regulations, employment, etc., and operations that are in compliance with all company safety policies.
  • Ensure that patron credit needs are evaluated and credit is extended in accordance with company policies.  Monitor credit liability and ensure the collection of accounts receivable.
  • Monitor daily long/short positions.
  • Monitor information provided for month-end close, inventory valuation, bringing contracts to market, physical inventory, freight, etc.  Ensure that daily and month-end accounting transactions are properly documented for compliance with the owners’ Sarbanes-Oxley procedures.
  • Oversee the administration of company policies and procedures to ensure our promise of helping our owners grow is fulfilled
  • Communicate with managers and staff to coordinate and complete all aspects of the consolidated operation.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends or changes to accurately answer patron inquiries.
  • Ensure a safe, healthy workplace for employees.
  • Educate both employees and patrons in the operations of the Coop’s business objectives to enhance employee effectiveness and improve customer relations.
  • Utilize team / personnel within company to maximize profitability for the Coop as a company.
  • Manage the region’s workforce through responsible training and clear job assignment definition and explanation, including organizational chart, job descriptions, and regular employee reviews (annual).
  • Monitor the work of all employees to correct deficient performance and effectively reward and develop all employees.
Basic Qualifications: (required)
  • Degree in Agriculture or Business  (additional years of Cooperative management experience may offset education)
  • 5 plus years of Cooperative Manager experience
Preferred Qualifications: (desired)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or Business
  • Coop General Manager experience
