Coop Overview:
Bird Island Soil Service Center is looking for a General Manager to be based at their Bird Island, Minnesota location. Bird Island Soil Service, Inc. has been working with producers providing agronomy services for fertilizer, crop protection products, seed, application, lime spreading, litter spreading and crop monitoring.  The coop generates over $20 Million in annual sales.
 
Position Overview:
This position requires an understanding of agronomy, accounting, finance/budgeting, planning, business process controls, as well as good communication, supervisory, public relations and organizational skills to manage the total operation. The ideal candidate must be able to make decisions and work independently.  The incumbent must be detail oriented with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Responsibilities for this position include, but not limited to the following:
  • Manage the operation of the Coop objectives to provide patrons with prompt, courteous and effective service while maintaining the efficiency necessary to achieve a maximum margin of profit.
  • Establish and implement a program of safety and equipment maintenance to avoid breakdowns and limit safety hazards. Operate in compliance with Coop safety policies.
  • Evaluate patron credit needs and extend credit in accordance with Coop policies.  Monitor credit liability and manage the collection of accounts receivable.
  • Educate both employees and patrons in the operations of the Coop’s business objectives to enhance employee effectiveness and improve customer relations.
  • Establish and implement short-term goals that are consistent with long-range plans for growth in operation, including facility, equipment and personnel.
  • Communicate with employees to coordinate and complete all aspects of the agronomy operation.
  • Utilize personnel within Coop to maximize profitability for the Coop as a company.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends or changes to accurately answer patron inquiries.
  • Manage the Coops workforce through responsible training and clear job assignment definition and explanation, including organizational chart, job descriptions, and regular employee reviews (annual).
  • Monitor the work of all employees to correct deficient performance and effectively reward and develop all employees.
  • Oversee the administration of Coop policy to assure a positive contribution to the Coop owners.
  • Oversee the information provided for month-end close, inventory valuation, physical inventory, freight, etc.  Properly document daily and month-end accounting transactions.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
 
Qualifications:
  • 2 year or 4 year degree in Agriculture or Business or equivalent experience
  • 5 plus years team / employee management and leadership experience
  • 5 years’ experience division level P&L responsibility
  • 5 years’ experience working in agronomy
  • 2 years of designing and implementing division and financial policies and solutions to ensure profitability.
  • Candidate must possess excellent communication and leadership skills with a thorough understanding of finance, operational controls, business planning, human resources, and employee development.
  • Demonstrated excellent skills working with people, shown willingness to be visible with customers, and will have visionary and planning skills that lead to a shared vision.
  • 5 plus years’ experience working in the Producer Agricultural industry and Market Place and strong understanding of patronage.
